Saving Private Ryan
Ryan’s mom had four sons. All of them joined the army during World War II. Three of them got killed in actions. Her last son, Private Ryan, was assigned to 101st Airborne Division. The best of the finest officers, Captain John Miller, was ordered to save him from the battle and send him to his home. The Saving Private Ryan is their journey.
I spent two years with the United States Army as a KATUSA agent. That is a reason why I choose this book. Many friends of mine have been 101st Airborne Division. I’m fully aware of the United States Army so I guess it will be easy to understand the story. There are four sentences that we called ‘Warrior Ethos’. The last sentence is “I’ll never leave a fallen comrade”. Of course, Private Ryan is not a fallen comrade but the whole story is based on the sentence. Whenever their battle buddy got hit or wounded, they are willing to go back to where they were and drag him to a safe place. One day, one of my NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) asked me, which sentences of the Warrior Ethos is the most important to me. I said “the last one, sergeant”. He asked me why and I answered the reason. “I know someone will drag my body without any hesitation”. That is a Soldier and what a Soldier need to be.
CPT Miller’s team finally found the private. Even though they’ve lost two soldiers to find him, he doesn’t want to go back to his home because he doesn’t think he deserve it. Private Ryan’s unit was defending a bridge. The bridge is one of the most important gates for both of the Allied Forces and Germany. Captain Miller decided to stay with them and fight together. During this battle, most of his team were killed include himself.
When a German soldier got caught by Captain’s team, they release the soldier. At that time, they had a little disruption and Captain gave us a question. He was an English teacher in a small town but, right now, he is in the middle of battlefield and killing enemies. By telling his story to his soldiers, he makes readers to think about why they have to fight. I think the reason why we have war in this world is us. Human being is too greedy. We want to get what we want to have. Every war has a reason but it is always about resource or money directly or indirectly.
I have heard a tragic news a couple of months ago, one of my friends from the army got hit by an IED(Improvised Explosive Device) in Iraq. I called him right after I heard that. He said he is fine but he lost his left leg. Before the accident, the war in Iraq is nothing for me. I have three friends in Iraq but all of them work in safe place. However, unfortunately, Chris was a Military Police and he was on patrol when he was attacked. I felt really sorry for him. There was nothing I can do but I still don’t know why my friends have to fight over there. I wish the Iraq war would be the last war in this plane and God bless my friends in Iraq just like Private Ryan.
