Saving Private Ryan

Ryan’s mom had four sons. All of them joined the army during World War II. Three of them got killed in actions. Her last son, Private Ryan, was assigned to 101st Airborne Division. The best of the finest officers, Captain John Miller, was ordered to save him from the battle and send him to his home. The Saving Private Ryan is their journey.

I spent two years with the United States Army as a KATUSA agent. That is a reason why I choose this book. Many friends of mine have been 101st Airborne Division. I’m fully aware of the United States Army so I guess it will be easy to understand the story. There are four sentences that we called ‘Warrior Ethos’. The last sentence is “I’ll never leave a fallen comrade”. Of course, Private Ryan is not a fallen comrade but the whole story is based on the sentence. Whenever their battle buddy got hit or wounded, they are willing to go back to where they were and drag him to a safe place. One day, one of my NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) asked me, which sentences of the Warrior Ethos is the most important to me. I said “the last one, sergeant”. He asked me why and I answered the reason. “I know someone will drag my body without any hesitation”. That is a Soldier and what a Soldier need to be.

CPT Miller’s team finally found the private. Even though they’ve lost two soldiers to find him, he doesn’t want to go back to his home because he doesn’t think he deserve it. Private Ryan’s unit was defending a bridge. The bridge is one of the most important gates for both of the Allied Forces and Germany. Captain Miller decided to stay with them and fight together. During this battle, most of his team were killed include himself.

When a German soldier got caught by Captain’s team, they release the soldier. At that time, they had a little disruption and Captain gave us a question. He was an English teacher in a small town but, right now, he is in the middle of battlefield and killing enemies. By telling his story to his soldiers, he makes readers to think about why they have to fight. I think the reason why we have war in this world is us. Human being is too greedy. We want to get what we want to have. Every war has a reason but it is always about resource or money directly or indirectly.

I have heard a tragic news a couple of months ago, one of my friends from the army got hit by an IED(Improvised Explosive Device) in Iraq. I called him right after I heard that. He said he is fine but he lost his left leg. Before the accident, the war in Iraq is nothing for me. I have three friends in Iraq but all of them work in safe place. However, unfortunately, Chris was a Military Police and he was on patrol when he was attacked. I felt really sorry for him. There was nothing I can do but I still don’t know why my friends have to fight over there. I wish the Iraq war would be the last war in this plane and God bless my friends in Iraq just like Private Ryan.

Some countries have laws that forbid advertising campaigns for tobacco and alcohol on TV. Do you agree or disagree with these laws? Explain your opinion, and support it with reasons.

Have you ever seen an actor is smoking on a TV commercial? If you have seen that commercial, you must be older than 30 years old. In 1971, the U.S. Congress passed an act for the prohibition of tobacco advertisement on TV commercial. I think that was one of the best changes of broadcasting history.

In Korea, the greatest change was little late. Right after the government revised the National Health Promotion Law in 2000. Three major broadcasting companies volunteered to prohibit smoking on TV dramas. In accordance with the law, tobacco advertisements on TV are illegal now. Think about what happen in 2001. The Minister of Health and Welfare did a survey about how many students are smoking. The result of the survey was amazing. In 1997, 35% of male students in high school were smoking. After the revision of the law, the number of the students falls off to 16.2%.

Students are vulnerable to visual information. Most of actors/actresses are very gorgeous. When they are smoking on TV, young teenagers think that smoking itself is gorgeous. The stars are their idols or icons and juveniles want to be the star. That is one of the reason that we need to get rid of tobacco commercial from the TV. Teenagers are not careful as much as adults. They are not grown enough to think about the consequence of smoking before they do.

In addition, people, especially young high school students, want to do what they are not allowed to do. All over the world, alcoholic beverages are strictly forbidden to minors because it causes more serious damage to the juveniles. Alcohol and tobacco cause not only physical but also mental and social problems. If you smoke, over hundreds of toxic materials will attack your body includes all of your major organs. Besides, when you get drunk, innumerable brain cells will be disrupted. It is really serious problem for the growing boys and girls. There is no reason to show them the poison on the embellished commercial.

In fact, tobacco and alcohol are harmful to everybody even if they are grown up. Everybody knows that those are not good for your health. Unfortunately, however, both of them are addictive. Smoking people always think they need to quit but that is it. They realized the truth when they went too far. The purpose of advertisement is to make people buy their product. In other word, the purpose of tobacco and alcohol advertisement is to kill your brain cells and disable your main organs. Do you still want to smoke?
